Joel Gramm has spent more than 20 years serving in public safety, building a career grounded in preparation, judgment, and responsibility. His experience spans emergency medical response, fire service leadership, and law enforcement at both the local and state levels — reflecting the wide range of situations a sheriff’s office must be prepared to handle.
Joel began his career as a professional firefighter and EMT, responding to emergencies where calm decision-making and lifesaving skills were critical. After relocating to Montana, he continued his fire service career in Glendive, serving as a lieutenant with the Glendive Fire Department. In that role, Joel held leadership responsibility for personnel, training, and operations.

While living and working in Montana, Joel transitioned into law enforcement, first serving as a city police officer and later with the Montana Highway Patrol. He served with the Patrol until 2024, gaining experience in rural response, traffic safety, investigations, and coordination across jurisdictions. He and his family have proudly called Dawson County home for the past 15 years.
The sheriff's office responds to far more than one type of call. Medical emergencies, fires, traffic crashes, domestic situations, natural disasters, and criminal investigations often demand different skills - sometimes all in the same day.
Joel's experience across emergency services and law enforcement has prepared him to understand those demands from every angle: as a first responder, a supervisor responsible for others, and an officer making critical decisions independently. That breadth of experience informs a steady, adaptable approach to leadership and public safety.
Throughout his career, Joel has completed more than 1,400 hours of documented law enforcement training, along with extensive hours of training in emergency medical response, fire service operations, and tactical instruction. His training includes advanced certifications in policing, firearms instruction, tactical medicine, crash investigation, and emergency response leadership. This ongoing commitment to professional development reflects Joel’s belief that preparation, training, and accountability are essential to earning public trust and leading a modern sheriff’s office.
Outside of his public safety career, Joel has remained connected to agriculture, reflecting the work ethic, responsibility, and long-term commitment that shape how he approaches leadership and service. He understands the value of showing up early, doing the work right, and taking responsibility for what is entrusted to you.
Joel has been married to his wife, Jessica, for nearly 28 years. Together they have six children and are proud grandparents. Family and community remain central to how he views stewardship, service, and the role of the sheriff.
